The first edition of the Lily Cup U11s football tournament was played at the club on Saturday 28th May. The U11's final game of the season was actually cancelled last week so no game for them last Saturday. Instead the team and parents met up at the SAC for an end of season barbecue and awards ceremony.
Lily Cup and end of season awards ceremony
The first edition of the Lily Cup U11s football tournament was played at the club on Saturday 28th May. The SAC lined up alongside the British School, Lycee International, Tir au Pigeon, Sevres and our special guests Whyteleafe Wanderers from Surrey in England to battle it out and to try and get their hands on the winners trophy.
The first phase of the tournament saw the teams drawn into two groups with the two winners and best placed second team going through to the final pool phase whilst the remaining three teams battled it out in the runners up pool. The British School guaranteed their place in the final pool winning both games quite comfortably whilst the SAC also cemented their place in the finals after drawing 2-2 with the Lycee International before running out 3-1 winners against Whyteleafe Wanderers. The Lycee International went through as best placed runners up after having lost out on goal difference against the SAC in group B after only beating Whyteleafe 2-1.
The day had started with high temperatures and blue skies but by mid afternoon the skies opened and we were treated to the odd hail storm but nothing that stopped play or dampened the kids enthusiasm. The games continued to be played in good spirit just as we had hoped. The first final pool game saw the hosts, the SAC, go up against the favourites, the British School, who managed to score an impressive 12 goals in their first two matches. It was a very close and well fought game but ultimately saw the British School come out winners 2-1. The second game was of a similar vein but saw the British School nudge it 3-1 against Lycee International which meant they were unbeaten and rightly crowned champions.
As a result the final fixture between the SAC and the Lycee International meant that they would be battling it out for the runners up spot and trophy. What a climax! It was a hard fought game and saw the two teams go into half time at 0-0. All to play for in the second half. The SAC eventually got the break through with a goal by Edouard before Alex wrapped it up with a second. Scenes of elation at the final whistle for the SAC who finished the season with some well earned silverware.
Well done to the British School for being crowned champions and to their number 8, Frederick who also took home the top goal scorers award with 6 goals. I thinks it's fair to say that the tournament was a success so thank you to all parents who helped out. Not only did the SAC bring home some silverware to go alongside the original Champions of France cup in the historic clubhouse trophy cabinet but we also managed to raise 1,500 euros for the Lily Foundation through the raffle on the day. Let's try and build on this and make it a permanent end of season fixture.
End of season awards ceremony
The U11's final game of the season was actually cancelled last week so no game for them last Saturday. Instead the team and parents met up at the SAC for an end of season barbecue and awards ceremony. Amongst the winners were Ines for Parents Player of the season, Oscar voted Players Player and Eliot picked up Most improved Player. Managers player of the year was awarded to the team as a whole for a great first season together which apparently saw the SAC end up in 3rd place in the league and Alex picked up top goal scorer having found the back of the net 6 times this season. Well done to all the players and a huge thank you to Didier and Eric for their coaching and efforts over the whole season.
Vive l'annee prochaine!!!
