John Hardy presents John Hardy Shield to victorious SAC captain Alastair Thomas after the match.
SAC are the inaugural holders of the John Hardy Shield after a victory on Sunday over Chateau de Thoiry CC at Thoiry. The Shield is to be played for twice a year between SAC and Thoiry, and is named in honour of John Hardy, a long-standing member of both clubs in recognition of his commitment and contribution to Thoiry and SAC, both on and off the field, over many years. Both clubs look forward to many great battles for the Shield in the years to come.
Turning to the inaugural match itself, SAC won the toss and elected to bat on a hot day. SAC posted a very competitive 237 all out, one ball short of our allotted 40 overs. Nisar Afridi made an outstanding 82, and Alastair Thomas made 36. In reply, Thoiry were bowled out for 99 in just 21 overs. Shakeel Ahmad took the key early wicket of Thoiry’s best batsman, before Gurdev Singh then proceeded to run through the middle order, taking 4 for 14. The quick bowlers did such a good job that the dream spin twin combination of Ben and Andrew Macintrye was left to debut the following weekend.
