This was our second South African Day Braai & Bat game, a T20 against the South Africans in Paris expat team, which was complemented by the best ever fanfare around a Cricket game at the Standard!
After having lost the toss & asked to bowl first, SAC found itself in a strong position after 6 overs with SAiP 30 for 3.
SAC's XI comprised of 3 of our upcoming Juniors and SAC's Captain, John Hardy, used them well in the first 10 overs. The standout among them was Logan, who showed courage to bowl full length, even to his Dad, Gavin, who was Captaining the SAiP side. Gavin & Mornay, who walked into bat at No.5, scored freely and put up a partnership of 80 odd in no time. A few close LBW appeals were turned down by the umpire & SAiP found itself in a commanding position after 16 overs with 115 runs on the board.
John Hardy brought himself on to get rid of Mornay, who scored a boundary-laced 38. After Mornay's dismissal, the SAC bowlers put the brakes on the SAiP innings, which eventually ended at 142/7. Gavin was the top scorer with 42 valuable runs.
In the chase, SAC lost its 1st wicket in the 1st over itself. The wicket saw SAC's prolific runscorer in the last 2 seasons, Alex Kidwell, take guard at No.3. A couple of impressive pull shots by Alex despite the fall of SAC's 2nd wicket saw the momentum of the game shift towards the SAC. Trevin Keller, who walked in at No.4 after an injury layoff of 6 weeks hit some crisp boundaries to set up an effortless 60-run stand with Alex.
Alex, who was, unfortunately, playing his last game of the Season for the SAC, eventually got out on 24. Trevin retired Hurt at 40* to provide the other batsmen with an opportunity in the middle.
Another wicket down and the SAC saw their trusted middle-order batsmen, Shakeel Ahmad and Stephen Hackett, join forces to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Stephen, playing his last game until September, hit a few crunching boundaries to mid-wicket, as the SAC cantered home to win the game with a couple of overs to spare, thanks to Stephen's boundary-filled 36 n.o.
The highlight of the game remains the music played throughout the entirety of the game. Not to mention the amazing Braai & Beer during the mid-innings break!
