Peter Gill
17/9/1927 - 30/8/2020

Peter was born in 1937 in Karachi, which was British India at that time. He was the youngest of six children, all of whom attended boarding school in the Himalayas until the partition in 1947. When Peter was 11, his family moved to England where he completed his studies and qualified as an engineer. At the age of 26 he moved to Germany where he stayed for 4 years. He learned German very quickly and appreciated the warm welcome of the people. He then came to France where he eventually settled. However, his successful business career representing Italian companies saw him travel around the world where he could easily communicate in any of his five languages.

At retirement and preferring a sunny climate, he decided to live near Perpignan. In his usual way, he made many friends within a very short period, amongst them quite a few British people. Pursuing his musical talents, he joined a choir and played bongo drums in a band specializing in Latin American music and led by a well-known British arranger. On two occasions, he walked the famous el Camino de Compostela, a feat only achieved by true pilgrims. In November 2018, his illness was diagnosed, and he spent his last years in the Paris region.

As a true global citizen, Peter’s many qualities were greatly appreciated by his family and by numerous friends across the world who enjoyed his lively company and generous hospitality over a long period. His good humour, sharp wit and kindness were well known to family and friends alike.

Always an accomplished sportsman with nimble tennis skills, Peter was an active and long-standing member of the Standard Athletic Club. His involvement in activities will be greatly missed and he will always be remembered with great fondness.

Members of the SAC Club wish to express their condolences to Peter’s wife, Linda, and to their daughter Adina and her family.

There will be a funeral service is at the Clamart crématorium at 3 pm on Tuesday 8 September and there will be a small reception at the Club on the same day at 5 pm.
